Balayage, highlights or ombré: what's the difference and what's the budget?

Three lightening techniques, three results. Duration, upkeep and price ranges to make the right choice.

You want light in your hair but don't know which technique to ask for? Balayage, highlights and ombré don't give the same effect or require the same upkeep.

Foil highlights

The colourist lightens regular sections from root to tip. The result is bright and structured, but regrowth shows sooner.

Freehand balayage

Colour is painted directly onto the strand, as a gradient. The effect is natural and sun-kissed, with softer regrowth: plan a touch-up every three to four months.

Ombré and sombré

Dark roots and light ends with a marked transition (ombré) or a very blended one (sombré). It is the lowest-maintenance option.

The budget

Depending on length and technique, a full balayage often costs between $150 and $300 in Montreal, toner and blow-dry included. An in-salon consultation gives you an exact price.
